The Art of Scrolls
In Thrones, crafting knowledge is bound within enchanted scrolls. To create an item, thou must first possess the corresponding Recipe Scroll. These scrolls may be found as loot from vanquished enemies, purchased from wandering merchants, or traded betwixt players.
Once a scroll is learned, it is consumed and the recipe is permanently added to thy crafting repertoire. Thou mayest then craft the item as many times as thou hast materials, without further need of the scroll.
Some scrolls are exceedingly rare, dropped only by dungeon bosses or awarded for kingdom achievements. The most powerful equipment requires these legendary recipes, making their possessors highly sought after by ambitious guilds.
Recipe Categories
Recipes are organized into categories based upon their function. Each category requires different primary materials and may be enhanced by specialized crafting skills.
| Category | Primary Materials | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons | Ingots, Leather, Wood | Swords, Axes, Bows, Staves |
| Armor | Ingots, Leather, Cloth | Helmets, Chestplates, Greaves |
| Buildings | Wood, Stone, Brick | Towers, Forges, Storehouses |
| Consumables | Herbs, Oils, Essences | Potions, Bandages, Scrolls |
| Tools | Wood, Ingots | Pickaxes, Hatchets, Lanterns |
Certain categories unlock additional recipes as thy crafting skill improves. A journeyman smith may craft iron equipment, whilst only a master may work with mythril and enchanted ores.
Materials & Tiers
Raw materials gathered from the world must often be refined before use in crafting. Ores must be smelted into ingots, hides must be tanned into leather, and wood must be processed into planks.
| Tier | Raw Material | Refined Form | Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Copper Ore, Rough Hide | Copper Ingot, Leather | Starter equipment |
| II | Iron Ore, Thick Hide | Iron Ingot, Hardened Leather | Standard equipment |
| III | Steel Ore, Pristine Hide | Steel Ingot, Fine Leather | Quality equipment |
| IV | Mythril Ore, Dragon Hide | Mythril Ingot, Dragon Leather | Elite equipment |
| V | Void Crystal, Abyssal Essence | Void Ingot, Abyssal Leather | Legendary equipment |
Higher tier materials yield equipment with superior statistics but require correspondingly higher crafting skill levels to work. Additionally, rare materials often require specialized tools or forge upgrades.
The Forge
The Forge is the heart of any crafter's workshop. To smelt ores and craft metal equipment, thou must have access to a forge. Forges may be built upon thy claimed territory or found in friendly settlements.
Forges require fuel to operate. Common fuel includes wood and coal, though certain legendary recipes demand rarer combustibles such as dragon breath or phoenix feathers. The quality of fuel affects neither the crafting outcome nor speed—only the quantity consumed varies by recipe.
Kingdom forges may be upgraded to provide bonuses to all crafters within. A fully upgraded Grand Forge reduces material costs by 10% and increases the chance of crafting superior quality items.
Upgrade Paths
Equipment may be enhanced beyond its base statistics through the upgrade system. Each piece of equipment may be upgraded up to +10, with each level providing incremental stat bonuses.
Upgrading requires upgrade stones of the appropriate tier. The chance of success decreases at higher upgrade levels, and failure may result in the item losing upgrade levels or, at extreme tiers, breaking entirely.
| Upgrade Level | Success Rate | Failure Penalty |
|---|---|---|
| +1 to +3 | 100% | None (guaranteed) |
| +4 to +6 | 75% | -1 level on failure |
| +7 to +9 | 50% | -2 levels on failure |
| +10 | 25% | Item destroyed on failure |
Protection scrolls may be used to prevent item destruction at +10, though such scrolls are rare and costly. Many crafters recommend stopping at +9 unless the item is easily replaceable.
